ORBIT: Software fossils — what dead code reveals about dead teams

ORBIT: Software fossils

ORBIT placeholder. This is a very rough draft.

Sketch

You can often read the history of a team by looking at the codebase it left behind:

  • Abandoned feature flags → political fights
  • Orphaned migrations → panicked re-architectures
  • Strange naming conventions → a departed lead who cared about them
  • Suspicious commit gaps → layoffs, re-orgs, or the founder losing interest

I want to turn this into a method.

Why this matters

If codebases preserve organizational history, then reading them is a skill that matters beyond software.

ORBIT discussion: open. Super early draft — feedback on whether this line of thinking is worth pursuing is what I'm looking for.
